With the new creation of a Mental Health Court earlier this year and now with a Mental Health Public Defenders Office, Galveston County, Texas is making it a priority to treat those with mental illness rather than continually have them cycle through our criminal justice system. These programs will get people the treatment and help they need instead of running them through our jail to only return at a later date due to their unresolved mental health issues. This will in turn make our communities safer and eventually help lower costs in the criminal justice system – saving taxpayers $$.
