ALL County Residents Are Free To Return To The County

August 27, 2020

Galveston County, Texas – Galveston County residents are free to return to the County. Conditions on the mainland, Galveston Island and Bolivar Peninsula are safe for residents to make the trip back to their properties.

State Highway 87 and State Highway 124 have been cleared by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Bolivar-Galveston Ferry service has been restored.

Additional law enforcement assets have been dispatched to the unincorporated areas of Galveston County to provide added protection for residents’ properties as they make their return.

County Judge Mark Henry has rescinded the mandatory evacuation order for the Bolivar Peninsula.

Residents (EXCLUDING THE BOLIVAR PENINSULA) Free To Return To The County

August 27, 2020

Galveston County, Texas – Galveston County residents, excluding the Bolivar Peninsula, are free to return to the County. Conditions on the mainland and Galveston Island are safe for residents to make the trip back to their properties.

State Highway 87 and State Highway 124 are being cleared by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and are expected to be opened later today. TxDOT is also in the process of assessing conditions and working to restart the ferry service to the Peninsula. An additional announcement will be made later today once the transportation routes to the Bolivar Peninsula are reopened.

Additional law enforcement assets have been dispatched to the unincorporated areas of Galveston County to provide added protection for residents’ properties as they make their return.

If residents reside in an incorporated city, they should listen to notices from those jurisdictions and follow any guidelines provided by their local city officials.

The Galveston County Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor Hurricane Laura

August 26, 2020

Tropical force winds are anticipated early this evening and could last through the night. There is the possibility of coastal flooding on Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula.

Residents should continue to stay updated on all warnings from the

US National Weather Service Houston-Galveston Texas

and stay informed as Hurricane Laura moves toward landfall near the Texas/Louisiana.

Expected winds for East Bolivar Peninsula and High Island
– 60mph sustained winds
– 80mph wind gusts possible
Expected winds for East Galveston Island and Western Bolivar Peninsula
– 50mph sustained winds
– 70mph wind gusts possible
Expected winds for mainland Galveston County and West Galveston Island
– 40mph sustained winds
– Higher wind gust possible
