Areas of Interest in the Atlantic Update 6/28/2022

June 28, 2022

There remains a low chance of tropical cyclone development in the Gulf of Mexico off the lower to middle Texas coast in the next 2 to 5 days. The chance of formation within the next 2-5 days has increased to 30%

An area of low pressure is centered over the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Shower and storm activity associated with this low has increased overnight, but remains disorganized.

Some additional development of this system is possible over the next few days as it moves slowly westward or west southwestward towards the Texas Coast. Once it reaches the Texas Coast, it will lose any organization quickly as it slowly drifts north and towards Central Oklahoma by Saturday, bringing steady rainfall throughout Southeast Texas until then.

Regardless of development, ample rainfall amounts are possible along portions of the Texas Coast this week.

The rainfall forecast for Southeast Texas greatly depends on the organization and track of any potential system (or

lack of one). The further north it moves, the more rainfall we can expect for Southeast Texas and vice versa.

Given recent drought conditions, most soil across Southeast Texas can handle the forecasted rainfall amounts, so no flooding is expected at this time.

Right now, we are forecasting between Thursday and Saturday upwards of 3 inches of rainfall south of I-10 and upwards of 1-2 inches of rainfall north of I-10. However, localized higher amounts are possible.

Areas of Interest in the Atlantic

June 27, 2022

Hurricane Season 2022 is off to a brisk start with three areas of interest in the Atlantic. Although there are no threats to Galveston County at this time, we will continue to work closely with our partners at the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center.

Heat Advisory

June 10, 2022

• A Heat Advisory has been issued for all of southeast Texas for Saturday.
• Afternoon highs should top out between 99-102° inland and 88-94° at the beaches.
• Peak heat index values 106-110°.
• Conditions may be a few degrees hotter on Sunday and the Heat Advisory will probably be extended.
• Little relief is expected at night with lows only falling into the 76-83° range.

Triple Digit Heat This Weekend

June 10, 2022

Increasing temperatures can be expected today and over the weekend with inland highs approaching or exceeding 100 degrees. Heat index values are expected to approach or exceed 108 degrees on Saturday and again on Sunday, and a Heat Advisory will likely be needed for parts or possibly all of Southeast Texas. All heat safety precautions should be taken during this potentially dangerous heat event.

At this time, it looks like a more southerly wind flow beginning on Monday might end up keeping a majority of heat index temperatures below the 108 degree Heat Advisory threshold. Whether or not a Heat Advisory is in effect, all heat safety precautions should continue to be taken at the start of next week.

With the temperatures rising it is important to stay safe this summer.
Follow these tips for a safe time in the sun.

-Drink plenty of water. Ensure you, your loved ones, and your pets have plenty of water.

-Wear sunscreen. Even if it maybe cloudy, UV rays are still coming through.

-Move outdoor activities to cooler parts of the day. Check your hourly forecast and plan your day accordingly.

-Check on your neighbors and those at risk or the elderly.
